EFFECTIVE TIME MANAGEMENT FOR STUDENTS
By : M.R.Sethi
In the modern fast-paced world, there is never enough time for an
individual to fulfill all his or her obligations and to perform the
day-to-day duties. We often say that the student life is a free life
and that students have a lot of free time. But this is not exactly
true. In these days, the students are over-loaded with syllabi,
assignments and books and are often confronted with the shortage of
time. So the art of time management becomes is as much important for
students as for a successful businessman or a company executive.
However, with a few tips, the students can find more time to devote
to their studies and fare better in the examinations.
1. Make the daily-task lists
A student does not have to study alone. He or she has to attend to
class lectures, home work, house work, preparation for
tests/examinations and also to fulfill social obligations to some
extent. With all this work at hand, he may sometimes forget to
devote adequate time to his studies. One way to meet your goals is
to keep a daily task list. A typical task -list may be like:
General task - list (daily time table)
(a) Get up at ______
(b) Spend ______ time on morning rituals, bathing etc.
(c) Devote time to studies________
(d) Breakfast at ________
(e) Leave for college ______
(f) Return from college ______
(g) Time for rest and lunch______
(h) Rest after lunch – including siesta, if necessary
(i) Time for studies ________
(j) Time for rest and evening tea
(k) Time for recreation (meeting friends, watching the TV etc.)
(l) Time for studies _________
(m) Time for dinner
(n) Rest and TV
(o) Time for studies________
(p) go to sleep at _______
The Specific task-list
In your general task list you recognized the spells in a day that
you would use for studies. Now make a task-list or to-do list,
specifically for your studies. You may use the different spells for
different subjects or for different parts of the same subject. The
choice is yours.
In this list you may include the vacant periods during the academic
day in your college/university/institute
At the end of the day, look at your task-list. Mark off tasks that
have been completed. You may carry the undone tasks over to the next
day. Write all unfinished tasks on a new sheet for the next day for
a new list.
2. Break big tasks into small portions
Remember the riddle, “How do you eat an elephant?” The answer: “Bite
by bite.” , that is, one bite at a time. The same applies to the
task at hand. If it’s a big assignment, break it into small steps.
